{"id":11814,"date":"2017-03-27T09:07:21","date_gmt":"2017-03-27T15:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/the-glen-blog.com\/?p=11814"},"modified":"2017-03-27T09:07:21","modified_gmt":"2017-03-27T15:07:21","slug":"scammers-get-trickier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-glen-blog.com\/?p=11814","title":{"rendered":"Scammers get trickier."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Taken from the Santa Fe New Mexican~<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Re\u00adcu\u00adper\u00adat\u00ading at home af\u00adter a fall down a flight of stairs and a sub\u00adse\u00adquent head in\u00adjury, a friend was work\u00ading on his com\u00adputer when he re\u00adceived a call from \u201cWin\u00addows Com\u00adputer Ser\u00advices.\u201d\u00a0The man, who asked that his name not be pub\u00adlished, had re\u00adtired from his job as an elec\u00adtri\u00adcian af\u00adter be\u00ading di\u00adag\u00adnosed with Me\u00adniere\u2019s dis\u00adease, a chronic con\u00addi\u00adtion of the in\u00adner ear that causes ver\u00adtigo.<br \/>\nCoin\u00adci\u00adden\u00adtally, he said,\u00a0when he re\u00adceived the call, he was hav\u00ading a lit\u00adtle trou\u00adble with his com\u00adputer, so he pro\u00advided the caller with his credit card num\u00adber and pur\u00adchased a $139 ser\u00advice agree\u00adment.<br \/>\nHe also com\u00adplied with the caller\u2019s in\u00adstruc\u00adtions and down\u00adloaded soft\u00adware that al\u00adlowed the caller to take con\u00adtrol of his ma\u00adchine.\u00a0But later, he re\u00adal\u00adized that the caller had not fixed the prob\u00adlem he was hav\u00ading with his com\u00adputer. He then found\u00a0an\u00adother com\u00adputer re\u00adpair ser\u00advice on\u00adline and paid an ad\u00addi\u00adtional $139.<br \/>\nBy the time his wife re\u00adturned home from work, he had spent $417.<br \/>\n\u201cI was con\u00adfused and stupid,\u201d said the man, who had be\u00adcome the vic\u00adtim of cy\u00adber\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adnals. \u201cI just hope my story helps some\u00adone.\u201d<br \/>\nMean\u00adwhile, his wife called his credit card com\u00adpany, and work\u00aders there were able to can\u00adcel the charges.<br \/>\nOn Thurs\u00adday, the Fed\u00aderal Com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtions Com\u00admis\u00adsion re\u00adleased new rules to give phone car\u00adri\u00aders more au\u00adthor\u00adity to take ag\u00adgres\u00adsive ac\u00adtion against these types of scams, but the rules will not go into ef\u00adfect im\u00adme\u00addi\u00adately.<br \/>\nThe FCC al\u00adready re\u00adquires tele\u00admar\u00adketers to make\u00a0spe\u00adcific dis\u00adclo\u00adsures and sets lim\u00adits on the times tele\u00admar\u00adketers may call and pro\u00adhibits call\u00aders from con\u00adtact\u00ading phone num\u00adbers listed on a Na\u00adtional Do Not Call Registry.\u00a0But the agency still records more than 325,000 com\u00adplaints each month about un\u00adwanted tele\u00admar\u00adket\u00ading calls from tele\u00adphone cus\u00adtomers listed on the reg\u00adistry.<br \/>\nCy\u00adber\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adnals have be\u00adcome in\u00adcreas\u00adingly shrewd, us\u00ading robo-call\u00ading soft\u00adware and spoofed num\u00adbers that ap\u00adpear to be le\u00adgit\u00adi\u00admate gov\u00adern\u00adment or lo\u00adcal num\u00adbers, ac\u00adcord\u00ading to the FCC. Thou\u00adsands of peo\u00adple lose their money and per\u00adsonal in\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion to tele\u00adphone scams each year.<br \/>\nCur\u00adrent tele\u00adphone scams in\u00advolve call\u00aders claim\u00ading a per\u00adson owes fed\u00aderal in\u00adcome\u00a0taxes or re\u00adport\u00ading that a rel\u00ada\u00adtive is in jail. The scam\u00admer usu\u00adally de\u00admands pay\u00adment im\u00adme\u00addi\u00adately, of\u00adten want\u00ading money sent through a wire trans\u00adfer ser\u00advice or by a pre\u00adpaid card.<br \/>\nThe scam\u00admer may even in\u00adsist that a per\u00adson keep the call a se\u00adcret and not alert the po\u00adlice.<br \/>\nThe FCC rec\u00adom\u00admends you sim\u00adply hang up on any\u00adone ask\u00ading for per\u00adsonal or fi\u00adnan\u00adcial in\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion.<br \/>\nMi\u00adcrosoft will never proac\u00adtively reach out to a cus\u00adtomer to pro\u00advide un\u00adso\u00adlicited tech\u00adni\u00adcal sup\u00adport, ac\u00adcord\u00ading to the com\u00adpany\u2019s Safety and Se\u00adcu\u00adrity Cen\u00adter. Any com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion the com\u00adpany has with a cus\u00adtomer is ini\u00adti\u00adated by the cus\u00adtomer.<br \/>\nThe IRS never de\u00admands\u00a0im\u00adme\u00addi\u00adate pay\u00adment or makes a call about taxes owed. And the fed\u00aderal agency will never re\u00adquire a tax\u00adpayer to use a spe\u00adcific pay\u00adment method, such as a pre\u00adpaid debit card, or ask for credit or debit card num\u00adbers over the phone.<br \/>\nThe Fed\u00aderal Trade Com\u00admis\u00adsion urges peo\u00adple to re\u00adport any fraud\u00adu\u00adlent caller, even af\u00adter send\u00ading them money. They\u2019ll want more, the agency says.
