Why unlock your phone?
- If you travel out of the country and wish to use a local SIM card for the cheaper prices that this offers, you’ll want to unlock your phone.
- If you need a second phone number on occasion, like me, you’ll want to unlock your phone. (I use a T-Mobile sim to call dead beats with an unrecognized phone number.)
- If you are a felon and you need to hide your phone number from any possible police surveillance on your friends and family, you’ll need an unlocked phone.
While in Europe this past trip, I just decided to use the AT&T foreign roaming services. Big mistake! I expected to pay a small premium, but it cost me about $300 for the 2 phones. Previously I used local sim cards and it cost me about $60 for 2 phones and they all offered FREE data, which is very helpful when lost and using the maps features of your phone. Also, in Europe, the caller pays for the call to your phone and you garner no charge for someone calling you, something that is not offered when you use your regular carrier.
Carl pointed out that T-Mobile has great roaming packages and free data world-wide. Since my phones are unlocked, I may have to explore this option.
